My Dad the Game Master is a fun picture book story about a girl sharing her insights on what it means to live with her game master dad. Complete the Quest: The Poisonous Library by Brian McLachlan is a choose-your-own-adventure style graphic novel that prompts readers to make impactful choices, roleplay different characters, and go on an epic adventure with lots of twists and turns!
The Familiar Finders is a set of books designed for kids to imagine a fantastic hidden world filled with creatures that have a magical form AND to journal about it! While not a typical tabletop RPG, this book combo encourages kids to go out in nature and imagine the world of the familiars, kind of like a journaling LARP (live action roleplay) adventure! It’s encouraged my kid to go on many walks since we’ve started playing, and I hope you enjoy it too!
Roll for Initiative by Jaime Formato is a middle grade book all about making friends and finding oneself with some help from D&D! It follows the story of Riley as she rolls with life’s changes when her big brother (and D&D DM) moves away for college. She grows, makes friends, and starts running her own campaign… and, especially when her brother comes back home and tries to run things his way, learns that she maybe likes taking the initiative.
The So You Want to Be a… series is a collection of books that pairs with the Questlings tabletop RPG! You can read about how you can channel your favorite character class in real life and see your inner hero from the game shine through!
I had heard of Dungeon Critters before in recommendations and had been meaning to grab a copy when… I saw one at my local library! Needless to say, I checked it out immediately and had a great time reading this awesome tabletop RPG-vibed graphic novel together with my kid!
I had a great chat with Allen, author of Whispers of the Voidbringer, about his experiences picking up D&D and introducing TTRPG’s to his family. We talked about the influences his children have had on the book, born from a want to share a podcast-like story with his kids, and how to kick off the TTRPG experience with kids!
Princesses of the Pizza Parlor by Maikel Yarimizu is the story of and uncle running a tabletop role playing game for his niece and her tween friends. It’s a fun tale that follows their character’s adventures in the game… and the drama between the players outside of the game as they navigate their friendships. I enjoyed the read, and I hope you and your kids do too!
Whispers of the Voidbringer by M. Allen Hall is a TTRPG-inspired novel that gives a great example of kids playing D&D. It follows the epic adventures of a group of player characters as they navigate a classic fantasy world in danger…. And it also follows the parallel journey of the kids playing these characters as they navigate each other, learn the game, and experience this awesome quest. It was a fun read, and I hope you enjoy it as well!
