Review of Super Cool Monster Hunting Club

Wild stories come to life in this TTRPG where the ideas of a kid’s imagination about the strange happenings in town turn out to be… at least a little bit true! Rock-paper-scissors your way to the source of the mystery to find out what REALLY happened, and have fun using actual household gear to do so!

Age target for Super Cool Monster Hunting Club

Super Cool Monster Hunting Club can be found in of the Ten One Page Roleplaying Game (for Younger Players) bundle; it was made with kids and all-ages in mind through it’s creation.

This game works for kids, so long as they have the understanding and fine motor skills to be able to play rock-paper-scissors. There’s no dice or math or really even reading on the player’s part required, so the entry barrier to start playing pretty low on the mechanics side of things.

With the story, there are some spooky prompts to get you started (i.e. the culprit may be evil robot ghosts), however it is pretty kid-friendly and you have a lot of freedom with the story to make the tone and specific events how you and your players want/need.

Setting for Super Cool Monster Hunting Club

Super Cool Monster Hunting Club is set in a modern day neighborhood… and something is afoot!

You’ll roll to see what weird things are happening, and then, you all kind of create much of the theme and story together. Players are tasked with rolling for or coming up with ideas on how the two weird things that are happening are related and who could possibly be behind it, creating the foundation for your adventure (and finding out what’s REALLY going on).

For my playthrough, I ended up getting that all the cats and dogs in town were going missing and that there were strange lights in the woods, so we speculated that it could be that witches were throwing a wild party because it was Halloween, and it was freaking out the cats and dogs who were hiding OR that maybe it was fairies luring the pets into the woods to play with them. From here, we played out the story to find that it was a combo of the two and then some (a fairy witch looking for her lost familiar, and the spell went wrong with a big flash, luring ALL the pets in town to her). With the method used in the game, it created a solid base to work from AND it allowed everyone’s ideas to be part of the overall adventure… without requiring any GM prep in advance.

Your character in Super Cool Monster Hunting Club

Your character in Super Cool Monster Hunting Club is a kid who sees the strange goings-on in town and, with the help of their fellow curious kids, decides to investigate!

To create your character, you are pretty much playing as yourself, and all you need to do is find your gear… and by that I mean literally find some gear at home to dress up in and play with. You have three item slots to fill, and your character build could look something like one of ours:

  • Lego weapons for setting traps
  • Mixing bowl helmet for blocking hits and making noise
  • Talking stuffie for creating distractions

I think it was really fun to have actual physical props being used in the game; it’s cool to get to immerse yourself more into the story and play it out with a little more detail, and it’s a great creative exercise to think of all the ways you can use your items to help do what you want throughout the game.

Mechanics for Super Cool Monster Hunting Club

The mechanics in Super Cool Monster Hunting Club are based around rock-paper-scissors! To do any action, you play rock-paper-scissors versus the GM and see what happens as a result based on the danger scale provided with the game (it could be anything from wanting to disappear from embarrasement to actually getting disappeared)!

However, it’s not just regular rock-paper-scissors…

You have the items that you’ve collected during character creation, and now is the time to use those! If you can convincingly use one in a way that’s helpful, you get can play with two hands! They found a really simple way to give advantage when playing rock-paper-scissors, and I love that!

Overall thoughts on Super Cool Monster Hunting Club

Super Cool Monster Hunting Club is easy to learn, a great premise for silly and spooky adventures, and fun to play (especially when everyone’s where popcorn buckets on their heads and is ready to throw a talking baby Yoda toy distraction at a pride of territorial house cats). It’s got simple mechanics that do what they need to do while tying beautifully into the mood of the game and still providing enough variation and excitement to keep things interesting. I’d recommend this one as a good TTRPG for Halloween season or for any other time, and I hope you get to try it out!
