Halloween TTRPGs for all ages

Halloween tabletop RPGs for all ages (kids and grown ups)

Get a quick summary of some awesome TTRPGs that are great for playing with all ages (kids to adults) around Halloween time! Whether you’re looking for one-shots, campaigns, new systems, or just some ideas, I hope this list helps you find some spooktacular games to try out with your group!

A quick note on game tone and spooky stories:

The games listed here are aimed at being something that both youth and adult players would enjoy playing (along the lines of a Halloween party where adults bring their kids). Because you have freedom to make the story as spooky as you want, please make sure to consider the people at your table so everyone has fun. I have an article here that may help with this.

All-ages Halloween tabletop RPGs that I’ve checked out on TTRPGkids

Ghost + Human

This duet tabletop RPG has two players supporting each other in tandem as they solve a mystery together! In Ghost + Human, one acts as the ghost, with access to the supernatural realm, while the other is a human, able to interact with the physical world. It’s got wonderful Halloween vibes, is great for new players who would do well learning a new ruleset with the buddy system, and it can generate a ton of supernatural themed adventures with it’s prompt tables and ad libs! Crawl of Cthulhu

Crawl of Cthulhu is a Babies and Broadswords adventure with lots of great spooky vibes set in a world where you basically play as monster-like Rugrats characters who are doing kids stuff, like sneaking out of bed to look for cookies a 2am, and getting into all kinds of weird trouble. The system is another one that’s easy to pick up (I played a 1-shot of Babies and Broadswords with the creators, which was both a blast and an easy game to jump into). For either Halloween or just some eldritch-themed stories, this one is worth a check. (find the project feature here)

Numbskulls

When it comes to Numbskulls, it is time for some spooky, silly shenanigans! Play as a skeleton masquerading as one of the living to help your necromancer creator complete their tasks, whether that be taking on the rival necromancer or going on a shopping spree! This one is great for more lighthearted games with younger kids, and it’s a one-page TTRPG that has a great balance in it’s rules complexity, humor, and playability. (find the full review here)

Coven of Cats

Coven of Cats is a D&D 5e compatible adventure that’s great for any age where you play as magical cats who have joined together to study the arcane arts and solve a mystery that’s plaguing the other cats in town.  It comes with everything you need to play, is wonderfully illustrated, and is purrfect for some cat-themed TTRPG fun that has some witchy Halloween vibes! Mages & Macrophages

If you want an all-in-one game with physical components and pre-made everything for the adventure, I really recommend checking out Mages & Macrophages. It comes with standees, item tokens, maps, prompts, puzzles, a GM screen, and a parsed down D&D-esque rules set that’s great for a one-shot and playability for new players. The story is about battling into a zombie infested lab to try to find a cure for the virus, which sounds like it can be a bit scary, but, as we found with our game, it’s all about how you adjust your tone (i.e. maybe the zombies are eating rotten garbage instead of actual brains). Monster of the Week

I feel like I can’t have a Halloween TTRPG list without including Monster of the Week. While a lot of the material out there for Monster of the Week is a bit on the PG-13 side, it is also VERY adjustable to allow creation of adventures for younger audiences, and the mechanics are pretty intuitive for new player. I played Monster of the Week for the first time in a PG-rated charity one-shot adventure (review article here), and it was a lot of fun while also being easy to learn as a new system quickly.

Eldritch Pets

Eldritch Pets is a rules-lite journaling tabletop RPG that’s all about raising a cute and terrible little creature!  You’ll be rolling for random prompts that affect your pet’s corruption level and your character’s ability to handle said corruption as you delve into the world of the weird and oddly cute. This game is particularly good as an option with minimal rules and for a quick game or for solo play, fitting a lot of the niches on age, time, and reduced player count that are maybe left by some of the others… plus, it is also just some wonderfully chaotic fun!
