Magical Kitties Save the Day is made for all ages (counting required)

Since Magical Kitties Save the Day is an all ages game, everyone should be able to join in the play and have fun.

It isn’t too complicated for children to be able to grasp, but it also stays entertaining for adults –   the game that I played during the charity convention was all adults, and I had a great time.  It is really all-ages friendly (not just for kids).

The content was very all-ages friendly and can be easily tweaked if you want to adjust anything for your players, or even if you wanted to removed combat and focus on your kitty’s other stats to resolve the game.

Magical Kitties‘ setting ranging from every day to fantastical

You adventure through town, and sometimes beyond, to make sure your human stays safe and is taken care of.  However, just because you are within town doesn’t mean things won’t get exciting.

Something like a visit to the local library (which was what happened in my game) turns into a wild and magical quest involving some very unexpected NPC’s and dozens of paths to explore.  There are also lots of additional settings available that go far beyond town and into a medieval setting and more.

It is a well developed game with lots of opportunity within the given setting or to expand on with your own creativity.

Your magical kitty character

Your characters stats in Magical Kitties Save the Day are pretty easy to set up; using the random assignment method, it took about 3-4 minutes to make my character sheet… excluding the time it took for me to name my kitty.

You have three skills: cunning (intelligence), fierce (for anything physical or combat), and cute (social).  You give one skill a 1, one gets a 2, and one gets a 3.  This defines your strength with each skill and how many dice you get to roll when using it (see more in the mechanics section).

In addition, you also assign a talent, a flaw, and a magical power from the list.  The talents and flaws help give your kitty personality and provide a foundation for some good roll play scenarios.  Your magical power defines the special abilities you get to use and develop to face bigger challenges.

Game mechanics in Magical Kitties Save the Day:

Magical Kitties Save the Day has characters level with XP and is moderated by a game master (GM), similar to Dungeons and Dragons (D&D).  Unlike D&D, it uses a d6 dice pool system instead of a d20 system and has a “kitty treat” mechanic to let you strategically avoid mishaps.

Dice pool and successes:

In the character section, I mentioned that there were attributes (cunning, fierce, and cute) that you assigned either a 1, 2, or 3 to.  Those numbers reflect how many dice you get to roll when you use that skill.

If you put 2 into cunning, your kitty gets to roll 2 dice whenever you try to use that skill.  The more dice you get to roll, the more likely you are to get successes.

When you want to attempt an action, the GM will set what rolls are considered a success. For something that is very easy, maybe you only need to roll a 2 or higher to complete your goal.  For something challenging, maybe you only complete it if you roll a 5 or higher.

The number of successful rolls from your dice pool determines the outcome:

  • 0 successes = failure + complication
  • 1 success = achieve goal + complication
  • 2 successes = achieve goal
  • 3+ successes = achieve + bonus

Kitty treats used to give a boost:

Kitty treats allow you to bypass an occasional consequence.  You can use them to reroll a die, avoid owies (damage points), activate bonus features from your magical powers, or alter the story (if the GM agrees).

You can earn kitty treats by roll playing your flaws.  So, if your kitty’s flaw is that they are conceited, you could roll play them questioning, “Why would my human ever be sad?  He has me!”  It adds to the story and turns your flaws into something fun or funny.

Overall thoughts on Magical Kitties Save the Day:

Magical Kitties Save the Day is easy to understand, dynamic, and just fun the whole way through.  I had a fantastic time playing it and am getting our own family copy so I can start integrating it into our game nights.

I look forward to playing it again soon, and I hope you can give it a try as well!
