While most TTRPGs that I’ve come across intrinsically rely on some element of teamwork or cooperation, sometimes you find a TTRPG that revolves around it in a special way. It could be in the form of special team moves, pairing powers, or literally calling out frienship as a mechanic! Here’s a few that I’ve found and enjoyed!

TTRPGs about friendship and teamwork that I’ve checked out on TTRPGkids

BFF!

BFF! is a tabletop RPG about changing and growing friendships, fun hijinks with your besties, and the joys of finding adventure in everyday life! The overall mechanic in BFF! is in how you’re encouraged to engage with other players.  Players take turns using their prompt cards to kick off part of the story to see what the characters can get up to together. BFF!, from the name to the game itself, is totally focused on you and your friends.

Your character in Nancy Druid is a scout who is part of a troop, a druid who protects nature, and a detective who solves mysteries! They’re regularly going out with their fellow druids to seek out puzzling situations and help the environment too. Teamwork is a huge part of your troop’s adventures… and you even get to do a team montage song and dance number at the end to share what you’ve each learned during your journey! Wyrmlings

Wyrmlings is an all ages tabletop RPG about a group of young dragons taking on challenges through their own strength and that of their friends while going to school and exploring the world around them! You’ll need to work together to complete challenges as teamwork and recognizing everyone’s individual strengths is one of the basic mechanics and lessons of the game.

Felt, Friendship, and Feelings

In Felt, Friendship, and Feelings, each character gets to choose how many dice they put towards which skills to determine what you get to do in each scene.  These skills are separated into felt (stuff you can do), friendship (cooperative skills), and feelings (emotional skills).  In addition, your friendship and feelings skills both can be used to help your fellow players – by giving them some of your dice!  Friendship is not only the name of a mechanic in the game, but it encourages that teamwork for the players (outside of the game) as well.

Ghost + Human

Ghost + Human at a glance

Age rec: all ages, especially with the buddy system
Setting: ghosty mysteries
Character: either a ghost or a human (2 players)
Mechanic: d6 system
Time: 15-20 minutes to read rules/game and 30-60 minute adventures

This duet tabletop RPG has two players supporting each other in tandem as they solve a mystery together! In Ghost + Human, one acts as the ghost, with access to the supernatural realm, while the other is a human, able to interact with the physical world. While friendship between the two characters is not a requirement, it can sure help…. and the mechanics can lend to a story of friendship growing over time. Either way though, you will need to work together to solve the mystery with your team’s full set of abilities!

Teatime Adventures

In Teatime Adventures, bigger spells require multiple characters to cast in order to pool all your abilities and astra alignment bonuses, so you need some kind of consensus from the whole group when you want to do a very significant move.  This makes sure the group is discussing their ideas and working together from the mechanics to the general themes of the game (which has tons of cozy stories to explore that lend themselves to collaboration, friendship, and teamwork in many ways)!

Other friendship and teamwork themed TTRPGs to check out

The games listed above are ones that have articles on TTRPGkids about them and that have a particular “team up” kind of vibe that I thought embodied what teamwork and friendship are all about.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t more out there that I haven’t checked out yet! If I find or am recommended more games that are built strongly on friendship and teamwork themes, but haven’t been able to play and review them yet, I’ll add them here to keep this list alive and active.

Recommend a friendship and teamwork themed TTRPG!

For other recommendations, let me know what you think I should check out! There’s a lot of great TTRPGs out there, and, for this list, I’m searching for ones that specifically have mechanics AND themes that play into the friendship and teamwork feel. Lots of TTRPGs do have this by just being a TTRPG, so I’m looking for special recommendations where there is very intentional design that pushes the boundaries of how friendship and teamwork can be highlighted in a game.

If you have a suggestion for a game to check out, let me know in the comments or by one of the methods on the contact page here so I know what to investigate!

I hope this list helps you to find some awesome friendship and teamwork themed TTRPGs to play with your kids, family, and friends, and… If you liked this post, make sure to subscribe to the TTRPGkids monthly newsletter to stay up to date on the latest reviews, tips and tricks, game and podcast list updates, and more!
